Bee’s Wrap is a wonderful, sustainable, non toxic alternative to plastic cling wrap. It can used to wrap a wide variety of foods including produce, bread and cheese.
I have always been fascinated by brands that bring the best of nature to us, the brands that strive to make the world a little less toxic, those that are more sustainable and make us aware of the possibilities out there as opposed to the conventional choices that we often stick to blindly.
Although it is difficult to forego plastic completely and embrace only eco-friendly options, we can make small switches to ease and hasten our transition to a more environment-friendly, non-toxic home.
This can be done in stages, which is a more cost effective way and one that doesn’t make your feel overwhelmed.
Bee’s wax food wrap is an excellent, sustainable, non toxic alternative to plastic cling film.
What are bee’s wax wraps?
Beeswax wrap is a sustainable alternative to regular plastic wrap and single-use plastic. It is a food wrap material made by coating a fabric, usually cotton, with beeswax, resins and oils to make it water resistant and air-tight.
There are different brands selling beeswax wraps on Etsy and Amazon. I decided to go for the Bees Wrap brand which seemed to be the most popular one and had great reviews on various online platforms.
Why I decided to try Bee’s Wrap.
To be honest, it was the aesthetics of the product that caught my eye first – the prints and colors on Bee’s Wrap were beautiful, signifying nature with symbols of honeybees, bears and butterflies. The design creates a good-for-you mark in your brain.
The other reason was that the GOTS certified organic cotton used in Bee’s Wrap is breathable, as opposed to plastic wraps, thereby keeping whatever is wrapped in it fresh longer.
How is the Bee’s Wrap used?
Bee’s Wrap is made of organic cotton, sustainably sourced beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin which makes it very malleable. You just need the warmth of your hands to make it flexible enough to wrap it around a piece of food or bowl.
How to care for Bee’s Wrap?
I typically wash Bee’s Wrap in cool water with a mild soap. Do note that as it is made of beeswax and so it may melt when subjected to hot water or temperature. It can last up to an year if cared for properly. After that you can add it your compost pile because it may not stick properly.
For what foods can Bee’s Wrap used?
Bee’s Wrap can be used to wrap produce, herbs, bread, cheese, snacks and anything except fish or meat, as you cannot sanitize it after use (Hot water cannot be used for cleaning). Also, always cool your food before wrapping it in Bee’s Wrap.
Is Bee’s Wrap economical?
A typical cling film wrap costs about $4.59. In comparison, an assorted pack of Bee’s Wrap containing a large, medium and small sheet costs $18.99.
While the price may even out over long term, Bee’s Wrap may seem expensive to some. But if you add up the benefits of using the sheets for at least one year with multiple uses per week, not having plastic touch your food and the benefit of it being non toxic and eco friendly, this cost seems to make sense more easily.
Pros & Cons of Bee’s Wrap
The Pros
This ecofriendly alternative is good for the environment, it is biodegradable and compostable.
It can be washed and reused for up to an year.
It is especially useful for storing cut produce, the smaller sheets come in handy for this. You can also cut the larger sheets and use it accordingly.
They are pliable and molds to the shape of the fruit or vegetable.
The produce seems to stay fresh longer
Beautiful nature patterns and colors
Cons
Requires maintenance, you cannot just throw off as you do with cling film, it has to be washed and reused.
Can’t wash with hot water, therefore cannot be used to wrap raw poultry or meat.
Can only be used to wrap cooled off foods.
Cannot replace glass containers used to store large batches of food.
Would I recommend buying it?
Yes, I would recommend having a few sheets of Bee’s Wrap among your portfolio of storage options, like glass containers. These can be used to wrap fresh cuts of produce, herbs etc. I found this especially useful in storing small slices of vegetables that are too small to need a glass container. This is just wrap and throw inside the fridge. You can also easily write on the wrap what’s inside it. Likewise, I’d strongly recommend it for being non-toxic and eco-friendly.
You can find Bee’s Wrap on Amazon.com
I found a great option for those of you in India from this wonderful brand called Hoopoe on a Hill. They are a group of women who work with indigenous communities in the hills of the Western Ghats in South India to sustainably source products from the lush forests that they inhabit. Their impressive portfolio of products include Beeswax Wrap Rolls.
