The word berry makes us always think of the usual suspects like strawberries, blueberries or raspberries, but there are so many other berries out there which are delicious, packed with nutrients and often times go unnoticed.
Enter the Mulberry fruit, a berry that looks like the more commonly found blackberry and when ripe has a mild, very sweet taste. Mulberries can be eaten right off the tree or can be incorporated into recipes like mulberry jam, mulberry pie or my mulberry lime drink.
When I first spotted a Mulberry tree while on a bike ride with my daughter, I was beyond excited. The mulberries were growing in the wild, left to be eaten by squirrels or birds and left plenty on the dirt road. Mulberries were very familiar to me growing up in the south of India, amongst myriad tropical plants and of course the Silk tree, the other name for mulberry tree, invented by me. But for those unfamiliar with it, the mulberry tree is famous for producing the most expensive mulberry silk – silkworms love it.
A few people stopped by to ask “Can you eat mulberries?” and proceeded to a small, impromptu, taste testing when they found I had dropped dead after eating the strange berries. Mulberries are delicious and in no way toxic to humans or pets.
Can you find Mulberries in a store?
Not to be confused with fashion brand of the same name , the mulberry fruit cannot be found at the supermarket. This is because they are very delicate and cannot be efficiently stored. They also have a small green stem attached to them which makes it a labor intensive process to mass produce and store the fruit.
That said, mulberries are best had fresh off the tree. You can identify a mulberry tree (yes unlike blackberry bushes, mulberries grow on a tree). Blackberry bushes have thorns while mulberries trees do not.

Step by Step Method to Make this Mulberry Lemonade Drink
Gather all the ingredients – mulberries, your preferred sweetener, the juice of one large lime and mint leaves.
Use a mortar and pestle or a blender to make a smooth puree of mulberries, sweetener, lime juice and mint leaves. I particularly enjoy using mortar and pestle because it is a therapeutic process seeing the juice ooze out of the berries.
This delicious syrup mixture can also be used as a compote.
Add ice cubes to two serving glasses. Divide the puree equally among two serving glasses. Top the glasses with seltzer water. Serve topped with Jaljeera powder (optional) mix (Jaljeera is an Indian spice powder mix made with dry mango powder, cumin powder etc) and enjoy immediately. You can buy Jaljeera powder here.
